Australian White Wine
For years, Australia’s white wines were defined by the oaky, buttery Chardonnay that dominated the supermarket shelves. Today, such an image couldn’t be further from the truth. While Chardonnay remains a popular variety, the contemporary examples coming out of Margaret River, Victoria and Adelaide Hills are lean and chiselled, showcasing wonderful restraint and winemaking rigour. Riesling continues to thrive in the Clare Valley, where it yields a lemon-and-lime minerality that is hard to replicate anywhere else on Earth. And historic styles such as Hunter Valley Semillon remain compelling, while emerging regions such as Tasmania offer up hugely exciting visions of the future.
