Dessert Wine
Dessert wines come in all shapes and sizes, from rich, decadent Ports to light, racy Riesling, all boasting varying degrees of sweetness. German Riesling is at the lighter end of the spectrum, offering not just a captivating sweetness, but a lower level of alcohol. Among the more indulgent sweet whites are the Sauternes of Bordeaux, their grapes affected by the so-called ‘noble rot’, or botrytis, which concentrates the sugars to deliver a wonderfully intense sweetness. Fortified wines are richer still, their sweetness produced via the addition of a grape spirit, which not only adds sugar, but alcohol. Port is perhaps the ultimate example of this style, and is made in various guises. Like most sweet wines, it pairs just as well with a cheeseboard as it does with dessert.
