Gamay
Historically planted throughout Burgundy, “Disloyal Gamay” was banished from the Côte d’Or by Duke Philip the Bold in the 14th Century. Even today the grape that defines Beaujolais remains much-maligned, which seems rather unfair. True, too much of our exposure to Gamay has been Beaujolais Nouveau. But look beyond this and you’ll find wines from the ten Beaujolais ‘crus’ that are complex, interesting, and even ageworthy. With careful selection, Gamay shouldn’t be overlooked.
