Brut Champagne
Brut Champagne is the most popular style of Champagne, and covers the majority of bottlings, both vintage and non-vintage. The word ‘brut’ means dry, and refers to the sugar content of the Champagne – in this case between 6-12 grams per litre (Extra Brut Champagne has less than 6g/l, whereas the recently popular wave of Brut Nature Champagnes should have no sugar content at all). Producers control the sugar content via the ‘dosage’ that is added after the secondary fermentation. The ‘Brut’ level is considered by most observers the sweet spot to balance the inherent acidity of the fizz and make for the perfect dry but not bracing rendering.
