Bordeaux St-Emilion Wine
Having first emerged in 1955 – a century after that of its Left Bank counterpart – and being subject to regular updates, St-Emilion’s classification of châteaux isn’t as all-pervading as that of the Médoc. But the grands crus classés, from Angélus to Ausone, Cheval Blanc to Canon, are nonetheless giants of the wider Bordeaux wine scene, responsible for producing some of the region’s greatest-ever wines. And while the châteaux of St-Emilion are generally less ostentatious and imposing than those of the Médoc, the wines themselves can be every bit as attractive as the charming Medieval architecture of the town itself. For the most part, the wines here on the Right Bank show a preponderance of Merlot and Cabernet Franc in the blend, rather than Cabernet Sauvignon; lower down the chain, meanwhile, are a multitude of great-value bottlings at grand-cru and unclassified level, including from the so-called St-Emilion ‘satellites’.
