White wine

White wine is made only from the juice on the inside of the grape, not the skin on the outside. As a result, white wine can be made from grape varieties with coloured skins – Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer both have a pinkish hue when ripe, while the red Pinot Noir is harnessed in the making of Champagne. There are, of course, countless different white wine grape varieties, and their various characteristics – together with where and how they are grown – dictate the style of wine they produce. So-called ‘aromatic’ varieties such as Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc tend to yield racy, zesty wines with high-acidity, whereas ‘rounder’ varieties such as Chardonnay produce fatter, more generously textured wines, often accentuated by oak ageing.
