Spanish Red Wine
For many people, Spanish red wine means one thing and one thing only – Rioja. The venerable region in the country’s north-east has traditionally been home to smooth, oak-aged, vanilla-laden wines made largely from Tempranillo. But recent times have seen a focus on individual sites via more vibrant cuvées that focus on the vineyard and the complexity offered by other grape varieties, rather than merely the length of ageing. At the same time, the wines of other nearby regions, from Ribera del Duero to Toro to Priorat, have enjoyed a huge uplift in winemaking know-how and rigour, often via similar varieties, notably Garnacha (aka Grenache), to yield dynamic, vibrant wines that combine power and structure with nuance and energy.
