South African White Wine
South Africa’s white wines come in a pleasing array of shapes and sizes, but there’s no doubt as to what is the country’s premier variety – Chenin Blanc. It is with this grape that the Cape has carved out something of a reputation, rivalled in quality only by the variety’s home turf of the Loire Valley, in France. Like the Loire, the category is quite diverse stylistically, running the gamut of flinty austerity to richer, bruised apple-tinged renderings. In addition to Chenin, South African Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are also well-established styles, generally made in an elegant, restrained fashion that speaks of both ocean and cool-climate influences that lend a welcome freshness and minerality.
