South African Sauvignon Blanc
In recent years, South African Sauvignon Blanc has carved out a reputation for producing increasingly smart Sauvignon Blanc in a range of different styles. Generally closer to the Loire Valley’s herbaceous, savoury profile than New Zealand’s grassy, gooseberry-laden renderings, Cape Sauvignon nonetheless showcases a welcome spectrum of flavours, from green pepper and asparagus to flinty minerality, depending on the region and the winemaking approach, with more and more site-specific bottlings showcasing individual terroirs. Some winemakers stir the pot further via wild yeasts or even barrel ferments, lending yet more complexity and intrigue to a wine category that is going from strength to strength.
