French Sparkling Wine
Although many French regions produces a lighter, ‘cremant’ style of fizz, for most of us, when we think of French sparkling wine, we think Champagne. The world’s most famous bubbles herald from the renowned region of the same name, in northern France, 100 miles south of Paris. There, from the chalk-laden soils, the grandes marques of Bollinger, Roederer, Taittinger et al craft coveted cuvées from the three dominant grape varieties – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Most houses produce vintage and non-vintage wines, plus blanc de blancs and blanc de noirs, while single-vineyard wines are becoming more and more acclaimed, along with wines from independent growers.
