Blanc de Blancs
Chardonnay is one of the three main grape varieties used in Champagne, and the only white grape (the others being Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier). While most core bottlings, notably the non-vintage version, will be a blend of all three, many producers make a Chardonnay-only bottling, known as a Blanc de Blancs. Typically, such wines are light and more citrus-toned, with a vibrant, fruit-forward character that can develop creamy, bready notes over time. A handful of producers, such as Taittinger and Ruinart, make a prestige cuvée – their top bottling – in the blanc de blancs style.
