Alsace White Wine
The region of Alsace, on France’s eastern border, is home to a style of white wine that is hard to find in any other region of the country. Indeed it could be said that the zippy, aromatic grape varieties that thrive here have more in common with the profile of Germany’s white wine scene that they do that of their French counterpart. Here, in Alsace’s relatively cool climate and steeply sloped vineyards, the likes of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc have been cultivated for centuries, with individual sites gaining notable renown – and grand cru status. While most such wines are made in a zesty, racy, bone-dry style, look too for lush, sweet interpretations of Riesling in particular.
