The establishment of Austria’s wine classification system (DAC) has further emphasised regional typicity and quality, aligning the country's wine production closely with its unique terroirs and grape varieties. The reds, though less internationally renowned, continue to gain recognition. Among the varieties to look for, Blaufränkisch is prominent in Burgenland, in the east of the country, producing wines with deep colour, tannins and spice, while Zweigelt’s fragrant tones are complemented by rich, dark bramble fruit notes.

What are Austria’s key red wine regions and their defining characteristics?
Austria’s finest reds come from the country’s warmer east. In Burgenland, the spicy Blaufränkisch thrives: Leithaberg, one of the oldest wine regions in the world, delivers mineral, elegant expressions from limestone soils. Mittelburgenland, an area known for its red wine production, offers structure and spice from heavier clays. Carnuntum produces ripe, polished reds – often blends of Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt. Further south, close to Vienna, Thermenregion excels with the production of fragrant St. Laurent and Pinot Noir, grown on fossil-rich limestone. The warm Pannonian air from the east is balanced by cooling Alpine and lake influences, ensuring ripeness and quality abound.
