Austrian Fine Wine
A wine-producing country that sometimes goes under the radar, Austria can produce layered, characterful whites that offer compelling tension and interest. Grüner Veltliner is the key grape variety here, with the best producers making complex, minerally, sometimes spicy bottlings, often from vines clinging to steep, sun-drenched slopes. Riesling also plays a notable role – if less so than in neighbouring Germany – while Austria’s red wines shouldn’t be overlooked either, particularly those from Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt, two varieties that showcase a certain wild freshness to their bright fruit, particularly when grown at altitude.
