Rioja Wine Vintages

While making sweeping generalisations about vintages in Rioja is not straightforward, given the sub-regional differences and the variety of wine styles now being made, some conclusions can be drawn – particularly when dealing with wines blended from across the region. Vintage variation here, as in all the world’s great wine regions, is, after all, part of its appeal. As a broad rule of thumb, since the turn of the century, vintages ending in a ‘1’ have been stellar, while those ending in a ‘3’ are perhaps best avoided. Most recently, the cooler 2021 is emerging as a truly fine year, harmonious and balanced with great purity, while the early signs are that the hot and wet 2023 will also continue the pattern. Among other standout vintages, 2004, 2010, 2015 and 2019 generally offer fine balance, structure and longevity.
