South African Chenin Blanc
Outside its native Loire Valley, there is only one wine region that excels with Chenin Blanc – South Africa – and the variety is without doubt the Cape’s leading white grape. Like the Loire, Cape Chenin covers a diverse range of styles, running the gamut of flinty austerity to richer, bruised apple-tinged renderings (but rarely the sweeter end of the spectrum). From Stellenbosch to Swartland, South Africa is now producing a host of vibrant renderings that lend further lustre to the country’s increasingly dynamic wine scene.
