Barbera
Producing deeply coloured wines, low in tannin and high in acidity, Barbera is one of Piedmont’s key grape varieties. Whilst most Barbera wines are designed to be drunk young, the best from choice plots and old vines have a reasonable aging potential. Barbera d’Alba comes from the same hills as Barolo and Barbaresco, so will often surrender the best plots to the Nebbiolo grape. It is perhaps Barbera d’Asti, therefore, where this food-friendly grape variety can be considered to reach its zenith.
