2021 Southend Chardonnay, Newton Johnson, Hemel-en-Aarde
South Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde is the source of some of the Southern Hemisphere’s finest cool-climate wines, Chardonnay with a certain degree of Burgundian style is a particular specialty of the region. Newton Johnson are one of the region’s benchmark producers, firmly positioned by Tim Atkin MW as a “First Growth” in his Cape Classification. The 2021 Southend Chardonnay is a superb introduction to their range. A taut, chiselled palate loaded with expressive lemon and white peach fruit, tropical notes of pineapple are tempered by a cool salinity and a subtle toasty note on the finish. Utterly delicious, and brilliant value.
