2017 Contrada Villagrande Etna Rosso, Barone di Villagrande, Sicily

Wow. What purity and focus, and also such silky tannins. This is a brilliant red. Notes of pomegranate and rose petal, and lots of blood orange add to the core of red fruit. The tannins are talc-like, and there’s such focus on the palate. This is outstanding.

Deep, dark and rich, the 2017 Etna Rosso Contrada Villagrande makes itself known in the glass. Ashen earth, currants, smoke and savoury exoticspices waft up and pull you close. It's silky and pliant in feel, but delivers a penetrating wave of dark fruits lifted by cooling herbal and salty mineral notes. The youthful density and concentration here are admirable, yet more so that balance is perfectly maintained, as the Villagrande concludes with grippy tannins under an air of balsam and tobacco. Another year or two of cellaring is recommended for this blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio.
