2023 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes, Marchand-Tawse

This cuvée is the main reason we started buying the wines from Marchand-Tawse. It is a winner every year. A generous, but well-judged 60% whole-bunch gives it a transparent purity, and the wine displays a tender and delicious blackcurrant fruit pastel core with a spicy finish. The vineyard sits just below Clos St-Denis, and next to Faconnières, in the heart of the village. We always lament that it is made in such tiny quantities.

The 2023 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru includes 40% whole bunch. It is far superior to the En La Rue Vergy on the nose, with precise red berry fruit, crushed stone and pressed flower scents. The palate is medium-bodied and lightly spiced with saturated tannins. It's quite peppery with just a soupçon of sur-maturité, though small enough to suspect that it will be subsumed with bottle age. This has good potential.
