2003 Château Léoville-Barton, Cru Classé St-Julien
Splendid in 2003. The partnership of wine-maker Michel Raoul, consultant oenologist Jacques Boissenot and the Barton family has chalked up successes in each and every vintage of the last twenty years. Abundant black fruits on the nose and palate – blackberry, cassis, plum and blueberry are all here – plus spices, and graphite (lead pencil), ably supported by a firm mattress of structured tannins. This is a prodigiously-built Barton – huge colour, power and concentration – yet there is no lack of harmony nor the indefinable saint-julien elegance.
