2002 Château Lafite-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac
Cabernet leads the way in imperious fashion, accounting for 87% of the blend, the balance Merlot and a little Cabernet Franc. The colour is suitably deep, with aromas revealing ripe-scented black fruit, with a more mineral-derived note. Concentrated on the palate with well-expressed, layered berry fruits. Very fine fruit quality indeed- no doubt due to the near perfect conditions afforded to Cabernet in the latter stages of the vintage. There is a very fine-nature to the tannins; grippy structure evident though not forced. A very pleasing sense of balance and harmony. A bright future beckons for a classically proportioned vintage for Lafite. A little less than half of Lafite’s production made it into the Grand Vin in this vintage.
