Alpha Estate
Alpha Estate has for several decades been a standard-bearer for the modern Greek wine movement. Yet when Alpha was founded in 1997 by viticulturist Makis Mavridis and oenologist Angelos Iatridis, the mountainous Amyndeon district that it sits in was still little-known. Winters in this windy place are cold, with snow – a far cry from the Aegean beaches most tourists enjoy. But this high-altitude terroir, in north-west Greece, is key to Alpha’s identity, along with meticulous site selection and winemaking.
The estate has a firm commitment to sustainability – the vineyards are quasi-organic and the high-tech winery generates around two-thirds of its power from solar panels. The range encompasses both reds made from the signature local Xinomavro grape and wines from international varieties. In 2025 Alpha also bought an estate on the island of Santorini.
