Château de Fieuzal

The gently sloping, gravel vineyards of Château de Fieuzal sit between Domaine de Chevalier and the well-known Château Malartic-Lagravière. The estate was named by the Fieuzal family and passed through four further owners as its reputation was established. The 1893 vintage allegedly filled the Vatican’s cellars, thanks to its owner’s connection to Pope Leo XIII. By the 1953 Graves Classifications, it was ranked a classed growth, but has flown mostly under the radar since then.

Lochlann Quinn is at the helm now, aided by Stephen Carrier who started out at Château Lynch-Bages and Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, of Château Angélus. They have revitalised the estate, working on improving the vineyards and building a new cellar with state-of-the-art wine making facilities. The 85 hectares of vines are sensitively tended using sustainable agriculture and careful attention to detail. There is a clear sense of focus, parcels are managed individually and grapes are both hand harvested and hand sorted twice before reaching the winery. Both red and white wines are made; the majority of the estate is given over to the production of red however the white is an elegant blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.
