Château Climens

First Growth Château Climens is regarded as one of Barsac’s top estates, appealing to Sauternes’ lovers with its distinctive poise and expressive fruit flavours. It has been in the Lurton family since 1971 and in 1992 Bernice Lurton took over from her father, Lucien, at just 22 years old. Since her inauguration, Climens has gone from strength to strength. Only five families have owned the Barsac estate since vineyards were planted here in the 1700s, testament to its privileged position within the appellation. Its 29 hectares of vineyards lie on typical limestone outcrops and sit at the highest point, albeit only 20m above sea-level. The vines are purely Sémillon, no other varieties are grown, setting it apart from the majority of its neighbours.. In 2014, Bernice was accredited with biodynamic status and it is her consistent approach that continues to take Climens on an upward trajectory. Her commitment to quality is so firm, that if a vintage is not deemed good enough, her grapes will be declassified and they won’t make Château Climens that year.
